Timmy Tim: Adding flavor to the Filipino rap scene
Secret’s out—the local rap scene is thirsty for variety. With all the killer, speed-is-a-plus rap songs bombarding your playlist, we won’t blame you for needing a break (we need it too!). But hidden in Manila’s busy streets of Taft Avenue is a rapper who wants to change the game.
Timothy Erguiza aka Timmy Tim is a rising province born rapper/poet, who made his way to the city to influence the youth through his words. He defies the Filipino rap scene with his slow and soulful rhymes, which by the way are perfect for a solo Sunday contemplation.
Timmy is constantly searching for good stories—literally. He shares with us his top secret of roaming around the Metro to meet new people while capturing stories that can potentially be turned into songs. Talk about effort.
“Manila is really diverse, and is open to a lot of opportunity and connection. I grew up in the province so I could really tell the difference. I usually go around QC, BGC, or Taft to hear people out and what they’ve gone through. This helps me lean more into spreading love in my music and sending messages through people’s experiences in life.”
With local rapper Curtismith as his mentor, he finds beauty in deep lyricism and a great connection with his audience. Having started as a word guy, it’s no surprise that Timmy sets his poetry to music. He subjects himself to the conventional creative process of finding the right words first, riffs and melodies second.
“I don’t rush myself into writing into a beat, but when I brainstorm and realize it matches, I go on and just keep following it up. I focus more on the lyrics I provide for the people then the flow comes right after”, says Timmy.
Injected in his rap songs are words on life, love, faith, and takes on socio-political issues. He believes that an artist has the power to use music as a means to turn things upside-down, if not spread positivity.
“We were born in this world introduced to drama, hate, and all the other evils but at the same time we were born with things like love. Instead of being sad about how depressing life could be, we could all get together and celebrate with what life has given us through different platforms. As for me, I do it through rapping.”
As he purveys his thoughts and that of others through his songs, he hops from one bar to another to gain exposure and be recognized as a living proof that the Filipino rap scene has so much more to offer.
Catch him tonight at “Nocturna” at Gorda, BGC as well as different bars around the Metro by checking his latest gigs on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/provincepoet/), Twitter (@_RealTimShady), or Instagram (@timmyrgz).
