Neighborhood focus: Poblacion beyond the bright lights
Poblacion translates to “town” or “population” in Spanish, a name usually used to refer to a municipality’s center of trade, religion and government. With a rich cultural past, Poblacion has indeed lived up to its name as one of Makati’s most important neighborhoods up to this day.
Considered to be one the first settlements in Makati, Barangay Poblacion can already be considered as a heritage site in its own right. With skyscrapers sprawling around the nearby business districts, this town has managed to open its doors to sprawling new businesses while keeping its old distinct charm intact. With generations of famillies still residing in this area, it is very easy to feel at home in a tight knit community like Poblacion.
The neighborhood boasts an array of establishments that can keep one preoccupied for the entire day. If you are a coffee lover, the best local brews that are worth the sip can be found at Tilde, Kismet and Commune. If you’re lucky, you can even catch poetry readings and improv performances there for free.
Other than a couple of ancestral houses in the area, see a glimpse of how this community values its heritage by visiting La Casita Mercedes, Museo ng Makati and Poblacion Church. You can also see the artistically refurbished pumping station by the river when you go for a ferry ride.
Score some handcrafted leather goods in The Workshop. Get groomed by the neighborhood’s trusted staff of Kapwa and Be Beautiful for Him. Find yourself at the epicenter of Poblacion’s artistic scene, Pineapple Lab, where there is always something new to see; may it be an art exhibit, a film showing or even a regular jamming event.
If you are a certified foodie or if walking around the city can easily make you hungry, you are in luck because in every turn of this town lies a dining place that offers amazing food to munch on. To mention a few there’s Filipino at Lobo, Indian and pizza at The Social, Izakaya at Tambai, Holy Smokes for meat lovers, and Som’s Noodle House, a Thai institution – all known to satisfy even the biggest of appetites. A big plus are the live bands and performances you get to see while you take a bite on the tasty side of this town.
For the casual drinker, we have DULO, House of Joe, Mathilde and OTO that serve the coldest beers and the warmest companies. As Poblacion never sleeps, feel free to extend the happy hour while singing Karaoke at Platinum, or dancing the night away at Emperius or Pura Vida, ending the night with sick house music at Time.
Indeed an entire day will not be enough to see all of what Poblacion has to offer. As the Makati workforce and even Manilenos from around the metro take their time to visit this community to unwind and have a good time, Poblacion shines bright with so much energy, the lights around the Burgos district appear as a fancy understatement. With a variety of options that appeal to any taste, no matter how wild or eclectic they may be, this is definitely a neighborhood where all the fun is at.
