Hustle Cafe: Helping Out-Of-School Youths One Cup Of Coffee At A Time
The hustle and bustle of big Manila is hard to escape. Especially, when you are looking for a place to work. Sometimes a coffee place can provide that peace and quiet. More often, however, they don’t. – if you’re lucky enough, there will be a free spot in-between hoarded tables and chairs taken by people and bags alike. But just when you thought you’re ready to work and enjoy that cup of coffee, you will hear that rather lulling elevator music contrasting with loud chitchats over funny Facebook videos and you find yourself horribly distracted.
While the usual scenario tries to challenge your sanity, a hidden haven in Cubao likes to retain it otherwise. Hustle Café is a specialty café with a vision to provide an escape from the urban jungle we call Manila. With large spaces and a sanctuary garden, the café lets you work productively and comfortably as if you are working from your own home. And while you get your job done, you also help people get a job. If you are wondering how, we’ve sniffed out the store and had a good conversation with the team behind it.
What is Hustle Café in a nutshell?
Hustle Café is a specialty coffee store owned and established by quirky entrepreneurs with a vision. Part of our proceeds from selling coffee and food goes to out-of-school youth for their food and beverage training.
Can you tell us when and how this business started?
Us partners were conceptualizing a program to help young people without jobs get an occupation in the F&B industry. We figured that getting them exposed and trained by top establishments would give them a better chance. That was about a year ago. In November 2016, we started selling cold brew and in April this year, the Hustle Café opened. Our passion and love for coffee has lead us to study the industry thoroughly and to find ways to share that very same passion.
What is the inspiration/concept behind the café?
We do look up to our local idols, Edsa Beverage Design Group and Yardstick, in terms of quality of coffee and design aesthetics. You look at something they create and it just shouts their brand identity. That’s the kind of aesthetic we want to build at Hustle Café— from start to finish you know you’re enjoying a unique experience every time you’re here.
Speaking of customer experience, we all just like making people happy and seeing them smile. Our main mission is to treat people the way you wish to be treated at home.
What do you think makes Hustle Café unique compared to other establishments?
Our customers always tell us how our Coffee Soda is nothing they’ve ever tried before and we are happy to receive really good comments about that. But again what we want to convey is that we’re really just like your home. We treat you like family, and wouldn’t do things we don’t want to happen to us.
What do you love about Cubao?
Cubao is such an interesting place. It has its own personality and because of the provincial bus terminals, you get people from all walks of life, coming and going and mixing with the eclectic local residents. We get all kinds of experiences and conversations in our space because of that and it makes every day so unique.
Make a change and help the Hustle Café help others! Their F&B training program for out-of-school youth is an amazing initiative to support.
