Dulo MNL: A safe haven for the artistically expressive
Located in the heart of the buzzing neighborhood of Makati’s Poblacion, Dulo MNL is a restaurant, bar-café and arts event space that strives to be the community’s creative hub.
Managed by Alexa Arabejo and Rae Lim Pineda, the idea was initially to create a communal living space for artists and eventually evolved into the multi-concept creative platform it is today: “We drew inspiration from a bar that was in Malate for more than 20 years called Penguin Bar & Cafe. It opened up during the dusk of martial law and became a watering hole for international photojournalists and many of the creatives back in the late 70s until the early 2000s. People lucky enough to have experienced Penguin during its prime would talk about it with such fond memories because you would meet all sorts of people from different walks of life, gathering there just to be themselves and have a good time. We wanted to try to create something similar to the feeling and experience what people had with Penguin.”
Dulo MNL welcomes all forms of artistic expression and various ideologies from different industries and practices. They would like to consider themselves as a safe, unfiltered, and uncensored platform that encourages collaboration among artists and creatives. At the same time, they want to make sure that they do not alienate people who are not of a creative background. Dulo MNL did not set out to create a “high-brow” or “snooty” space. Their primary goal is to bridge the gap between artists and audiences. They welcome everyone who wants to experience all forms of art, whether it is their first or tenth time.
“We knew that we wanted a place that mirrors our personal beliefs and sensibilities. We wanted a space that was sincere about serving great tasting food, well balanced-drinks, and giving people a special experience every single time. Not for the sake of the “gram” but because it’s what our guests deserve. We want to attract people from diverse backgrounds. You have young adults in college who have a smaller budget but on the other end, or the other “dulo”, you have the seasoned and more established creatives who have built a career and name for themselves. With that in mind, we wanted to make sure that our price points were competitive especially for the quality of food and drinks. But beyond that, we really wanted to make sure our service was also at par with the whole ambiance.” This is what makes Dulo MNL stand out. They genuinely care and want to make sure that the vision they set out to create was true to who they are.
Dulo MNL is home in Poblacion. Alexa says that the neighbourhood is becoming more and more the new “Malate” of our generation. The creatives and young entrepreneurs are the new vanguards of transforming this neighborhood that once was only associated as Makati’s red light district. Poblacion has earned a new identity as food, night and lifestyle destination: “There are many cool concepts popping up everywhere and they all are built by and with the community in mind. The sense of community is great: everyone helps everyone.”
