Community Chat: Royalty – a brand proudly made in Manila
Throwback to 2013 when people started shifting to low-key, monochromatic pieces and strayed away from all-out prints or plaid shirts tied around the waist. It’s as if the world suddenly realized the value of comfort and allowed oversized tees to step into the limelight. Of course being the competitive bunch Filipinos are, we joined the fun.
Royalty is one of the homegrown lifestyle clothing brands that ignited the trend to wear the local versions of these. It takes pride in crafting every piece in detail—from design conceptualizations to product delivery. To date, it lives up to its vision by selling purely local finds designed by the team themselves. We hit up Doyle and Carlo (founder and co-owner) for a quick chat and here are some facts you need to know before adding Royalty to your wardrobe.
Q: What is Royalty in a nutshell?
Royalty is a clothing label based in Manila that highlights the quality of craftsmanship and the high level of detail required in making garments.
Q: Can you tell us when and how this business started?
It started from a need to match tops with the ongoing trend of sneakers—specifically the Nike SB Janoski on 2013. Our first release consisted of patterned button-downs to pocket tees that matched the black floral Janoski shoes. Later that year, we released a full collection of baseball-inspired garments that were heavy in text and graphics which became the turning point of Royalty.
Q: What is the inspiration behind this business?
The main idea behind Royalty is to incorporate style and comfort tailored for modern times. Royalty means being able to rule your style. We are geared towards introducing our own cut & sew and ready-to-wear garments that would vary in textiles on our future collections. Our aim is to provide clothing that will become staples in our customer’s wardrobes—be it for casual or work outfits.
Q: What makes Royalty special compared to other local clothing brands?
Royalty is unique in a way that it has always adhered to providing the best quality clothing in the market. We are very involved in the whole process of fabrication—from sourcing raw materials to finished goods. We take pride in having an in-house manufacturing team in Rizal that produces most of our wearables which we oversee everyday. We have different types of sewing machines for different types of cloth—say, for denim or for cotton. We’ve purchased the necessary ones to ensure that we produce garments of quality. This is what we want to showcase to begin with: Royalty can execute clothing that are worth the price.
Q: What do you love about Manila?
We think that the diversity of fashion in Manila is a great incubator for brands such as Royalty. It gives us creative freedom to produce clothing that makes an impact in establishing an identity to the scene. It also provides us with inspiration to make the best clothing to mark Royalty in the global map while representing Philippines.
